More update from week 1 - Sorry have been busy! Hope to get more up to date soon!!!
19 February 2014
Here are a couple of the 'my first day at school' drawing and name samples from my students. They range from some kids doing random letters and symbols to 3 (Yes 3!!) that could write their name. The drawings were also an eye opener and show their lack of fine motor skills - Bring on the fine motor program in the morning!!

We had fun painting and decorating their faces on paper plates. We let the students choose the colour of their skin. Some of the faces were very interesting! In maths we then looked at how many boys and girls we had in our class and created a graph.

We are doing nursery ryhmes/poems as our theme for this term and our first one was 'way up high in the apple tree' . Thought apples were a fitting way to start the year!

My students loved singing the poem and doing the actions!

We made apple suncatchers using paper towel!

Download the free apple template from http://www.momto2poshlildivas.com/2012/09/fall-crafts-coffee-filter-appl...

I copied mine onto red and green card. Students cut around the apple but I cut the middle out with a stanly knife.

Each child was given a piece of paper towel and used red, green and yellow textas to colour in the towel. They then used droppers to drop water over it. They were so fascinated watching the water and the colours run together!!

When dry I just stapled them to the apple template. So easy and they look so effective!

We are completing a super song book to keep our poems in. Each week we do an activity with poem and a craft for their scrapbook. To start this week we just looked for and circle letters we were focusing on in week 1. Even this was a bit of a challenge 1st week back. For the craft they cut out a tree template I had copied onto green card and coloured in the trunk brown. Using left over apples from fruit time students apple printed five red apples. My EA cut the apples and the next day they wrote numbers on the apples. First we practised number formation on the mini whiteboards - saying our number formation chants (also found on the webby). These were then glued onto their tree.

To finish off we made delicious apple cookies. (We even added a little worm - because of course thats what worms like to eat best!)

We have cute little Ikea plastic spoons to make it easy and safe for students to ice their biscuits. This got a bit messy but they loved it!

I was a bit sneaky and bought a tub of Betty Crocker icing and just adding the green, red and brown dye in different bowls.

Next nursery rhyme - Baa Baa Black Sheep. Hoep to have the blog up on the weekend! Also have some pics of easy fine motor, maths and literacy rotation activities I have been doing to start the year!

What a 1st Week!
11 February 2014

So we have had our first week here in WA and it was busy! I loved meeting my new bunch of pre-primary kiddies, but wow they are weak!! A real eye opener. I again have a class with majority of the kids having English as a second language! Looking forward to the year but stressing about helping them all meet the Foundation Australian Curriculum! Wish me luck!

First here is a quick view of my classroom this year - I am lucky enough to have a double classroom for my pre-primaries and it gives us lots of room to spread out and play and complete activities! Firstly here is a view from each end of my class when standing in the middle of the room. Then more detailed pics underneath.

Our mat area and work desks area.

File 6876

The 'play' side of the classroom - with blocks, homecorner drawing etc.

File 6896

My kids all have a square to sit in. I do a lot of whole brain teaching strategies so having them in a set spot makes partner work on the mat really easy! Along the side each student has a basket to put their lunchbox, hat and any work they complete.

 File 6888

I have my desks set up in an 'L' shape around my mat. I also have my computers, and pencil and games collage trolley on this side of the room. The listening post and book corner are also on this side of the room.

 File 6889

My popcorn words display which will showcase the 5 words we focus on a week.

 File 6890

Once we have focused on them for a week they are added to our word wall for constant reference.

The colourful book corner.

File 6875

I encourage my kids to lay down or sit in the little couches and relax and read a book!

File 6892

Blocks, cars, lego - all the fun construction stuff!

File 6893

Our big circle drawing table. We use the tables joined together at the back for when we do craft or cooking. Great to have a big table to do activities/cooking with 8 or so kids.

File 6894

Another view of the big table and back of the class.

My desk and storage area.

File 6895

As we have carpet throughout the whole class - we have a big mat for either our painting easles - or we swap and put  tables there (which are to the right of the eases) to do playdough

Hope you enjoyed looking at the pics. Can't wait to get some more work up around the room!

Back to school resources
28 January 2014

By now I am sure that all of our Australian teachers are well and truly back into school mode for 2014. Where did those school holidays go?? We have recently added lots of new back to school resources to the website, but there are also some oldies that you may not know about. Take a look through and see if there's something to help you get ready for 2014. We all know that an organised and beautified classroom equals a smooth year... doesn't it???

File 6857

Teacher file covers. Get organised AND have it look cute! Win, win!

File 6858

Birthday cupcake display. Write each childs name into a candle along with the date, then add it to the cupcake.

 File 6860

Back to school photo sign. Take a photo of each child holding this sign as a way of commemorating the first day of school.

 File 6861

We made this cute registration board last year. As they enter the room students find their name and place their owl onto the tree. A great way to reinforce name recognition. Get your own owls here

 File 6862

Whole brain teaching rule cards. Never heard of whole brain teaching? Read more about it here in this blog post.

 File 6859

Playful play dough! The perfect welcome to school gift for the littlies. You can read more about how we use this resource in this blog post.

We want to see what you are doing to welcome your students back to school - and we're willing to pay for it too! Simply send us a photo of your back to school display (via our email admin@topteacher.com.au or PM us on our Facebook page) We will then add the photos to a show and tell album. Our Facebook followers will then vote on their favourite display. The one with the most likes wins a 1 year membership. Everyone who enters a photo will be awarded a 1 month membership. Looking forward to seeing what you create!

Wishing you a fantastic start to 2014!

Handprint Puzzles
20 January 2014

I have seen these handprint puzzles lots on Pinterest and was excited when I found puzzle templates in the art and craft store 'Riot'.

They come in packs of ten and are only $7. I couldn't believe my luck!

File 6818

I love this from Mrs Jump

On the first day I am going to make these with my Pre-Primary students. I have found heaps of cute ways other people have created these, and some peeps have even incorporated the book 'The Kissing Hand'.

When they are dry put them in a ziploc bag and let students play with their puzzle or swap with a friend. Before sending them home add this cute tag to the ziploc bag for the student to give to their parents. It encourages them to do the puzzle together and talk abut their first day of school.

Download the template here

I will put my finished ones on here in the first week back!
