For each colour you will need...
- 1 cup of uncooked rice
- 1 teaspoon of white vinegar
- gel food dye
- large dry container
To colour the rice add one cup of uncooked long grain rice to a dry container. Add in some food colouring (as much or as little as you like to create the depth of colour required). We found that the gel food colours produced the best results.
Use a toothpick to mix the colour around the dry rice before adding 1 teaspoon of white vinegar to the container.
Now put the lid on and shake the container until the colour has completely mixed in. This was a great opportunity to get the children involved! Shake, shake, shake!
Once the colour has mixed in completely tip it out onto a plate or tray to dry.
These colours took a couple of hours to dry completely before I tipped them into separate zip lock bags.
Once dry the colour is completely set to the rice and wont rub off onto hands, clothes, furniture etc!
We love using rainbow rice as a base for play trays. There is something strangely satisfying about mixing all those colours up!
