Cup-acity – a capacity task

This activity is a perfect task to use in assessing your students knowledge and understanding of capacity.

To complete the task the students must work out which cup holds the most liquid. They will need 2 cups of different sizes, the idea is to have a short fat cup which holds more liquid than the tall cup as this challenges their perception of capacity. The students will pour water into the first cup and then transfer it into the second cup. What do they notice? Does the water overflow? Do they need more water to top the cup up?

This task is perfect for student work portfolios.
